Presenting Quiz Competitions in History, Science, and Geography for Elementary, Middle & High School Students Across the USA!

Team Thursday is highlighting a fun and exciting team from the Georgia Quiz Bowl Circuit, Commerce High School of Commerce, GA!

This team, led by coach Robin Richards, has been a staple at IAC competitions for years, often hosting a Varsity/Junior Varsity tournament at least once in a season. These kids know how to have fun and work hard in a competition, and we look forward to seeing how they do this year!

To get your team featured on our Team Thursday posts, email a team photo to kiersten@iacompetitions.com with a description of your team, how long you have played with us, and what makes your team stand out from the crowd!

Today’s Where in the World Wednesday talks about connections in time. Today in history, 1955, a young man by the name of Emmett Till was brutally murdered without justice for his death.
The murderers, protected by laws against double jeopardy, admitted that they murdered and tortured the young man after being acquitted in a trial.
This admission lead to the start of the Civil Rights Movement .This lead to the Freedom Riders, the bus boycotts, etc.
Eight years later, on the anniversary of Till's death, Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech was delivered during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

Two events in history, linked together by their part in the Civil Rights movement, having the same date in history just eight years apart.

This Materials Monday has us looking to US Operations Director Deborah Pettingill's bookshelves!
Deborah is a former high school history teacher, and she has a plethora of resource books she recommends for our high school players to study specific areas. This week? Freedom Riders by Raymond Arsenault.

Arsenault's book is an excellent look into the history and the experiences of the Freedom Riders and the Civil Rights movement. While not for younger readers, it's a great read for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the Civil Rights movement in the south and elsewhere.

In a very special Where in the World Wednesday, we want to spotlight our very own iGeo team competing at the iGeo Championships in Dublin, Ireland this week.

From Team Leader Steve Muench: "Each year, I arrange a visit to the US Embassy and meet the ambassador and embassy staff. Since the ambassador herself was traveling, we instead met the Deputy Chief of Mission Michael Clausen, who is the #2 at the embassy. DCM Clausen met with us in a conference room to talk about our participation in iGeo and to learn more about the competition."

In this photo we have from left to right:
Julian Huang (Forest Hills, NY), Gideon Ong (College Station, TX), Steve Muench, Team Leader (Livingston, NJ), DCM Michael Clausen, US Embassy Dublin, Jason Flowers, Team Leader (Austin, TX), Ray Dai (Fredonia, NY), and Daniel Meyer (Arlington, VA)

Special thanks to @USEmbassyDublin for hosting our team!

The US Team is formed at the Varsity and Junior Varsity National Championships with the United States Geography Championships Exam. This multi-part exam is a longer exam, but the top four scoring Varsity players are selected (with the fifth and sixth place scoring students as alternates). Both Gideon Ong and Daniel Meyer were on last year's team representing us in Indonesia, so they have experience on their side for this tournament!

The younger divisions can also take the exam, and it is a great way to see who the shining stars are in geography around the country. Steve Muench and Jason Flowers have coached the team for many years now, and the kids have always said they have a blast with them. We thank them for their awesome work with the team.

This week, we are honouring our awesome iGeo team who are in Ireland this week with some fun Irish facts!

Did you know...In 1932, Earnest Walton (from Dungarvan, Co. Waterford) in collaboration with John Cockcroft, became the first people in history to artificially split the atom, thus ushering the nuclear age. Walton and Cockcroft had vindicated Einstein's famous equation (E=mc2) and successfully converted matter into energy. In 1951 they were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics - making Walton Ireland's first and only Nobel science laureate.

A science and history fact this week!

Stay tuned for more information this week about how the iGeo team from the United States are doing, as well as some honourable people they met while in Dublin! Good luck, team!

Today's supporting of our player's pursuits outside of competition has us featuring a multibook published author, Cameron Fica!

Cameron was a recent International Geography Championships competitor who, with his mom, has published two books with an amazing geography theme. His main character, Slothee, travels the world to discover all the different types of coffee, where it grows, and different animals from those parts of the world. The thought and imagination in them is great for introducing geography concepts in a relatable format for younger children.

Well done, Cameron! If people want to check out his books, go to https://www.slotheewantscoffee.com or follow them @slotheewantscoffee on social media to see where you can get his books.

Team Thursday is being revived! We want to make sure that our Varsity and Junior Varsity teams get as much love as our Middle and Elementary players, so since so many of that division are team based, Thursdays are just for them!

To kick things off, let's start with the team that created a trend at this year's National Championships for all divisions....Livingston High School @livi_qb !!

This team had a lot of fun at the Varsity and Junior Varsity National Championships with their fun and quirky mascot plushies. With team member @w0bert_bang (pictured on the left) leading the charge with his killer whale, Livingston took the top spot in History Bowl in the Varsity division, and Robert winning the National History Bee for Varsity as well. Robert later worked at our International Geography Championships in Vienna, where he was a hit with the kids who look up to him as a strong player and good for tips.

If you want your team highlighted in our social media "Team Thursday" posts, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/xgKi6GWft7xRgjJw5 and we will reach out to set up a post featuring your team!

Where in the World Wednesday is back!

This time, today’s Where in the World Wednesday involves none other than a pig!

Strange to think that this simple barnyard buddy could spark a revolution, but what country started its mass revolution in 1791 with the sacrifice of a pig rumoured to have magical powers? Tell us in the comments for a chance to win an IAC Tervis Tumbler!

Trivia Tuesday comes off the back of a book recommendation made yesterday....the thought about Waffle Houses triggered a random fact!

Did you know that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) uses an unofficial metric to determine the severity of a storm and the likely scale of assistance needed for recovery in an area?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index

It's true! If a Waffle House is operating on a full menu after a natural disaster, it's classified as green and minimal damage. Yellow signifies a limited menu and likely powered by a generator or low on supplies. If the restaurant is closed, it's Red.

Waffle Houses are known for being open 24/7 in the southern US, in areas known for strong weather such as tornados and hurricanes, and if a store is shown to be in yellow or green, it is a good sign of recovery for the area.

Materials Monday is back!

So with the new season about to start, parents and students have been emailing asking for their best resources to study for all levels of competition.

While we have past questions listed on our resources page (https://www.iacompetitions.com/resources/), sometimes people want more!
My personal favourites for books are the Curious Minds series, the North American Maps one in the image above being the newest in my collection. I find the statistics in the book both informative and humourous at the same time, such as the Waffle Houses by latitude or the fact that two out of three Americans live within 100 miles of the border.
My other favourite is the almanac on the left, Toksvig's Almanac. While it is dated as 2021, it has a fact for every day of the year, leaning heavily on the women in history and science from around the world. Another good one for that, On This Day in History from James Fell, is a good one.

I'll be sharing more recommendations as the season heats up from various coaches, teachers, and staffers.
