International Academic Competitions

United States Division

Presenting Quiz Competitions in History, Science, and Geography for Elementary, Middle & High School Students Across the USA!

With the new season underway, we are getting more requests about what to study and best materials to use to prepare for regional competitions.

While we will have study guides closer to tournament dates, in the meantime why not visit our website for old questions to practice with? https://www.iacompetitions.com/resources/

The best practice is to get used to the format of the question structure, which for bees is a pyramidal format: the questions are a paragraph long and start out broad but end with the answer becoming more apparent. Once students get used to the rhythm and format of the questions, the study guides will be more helpful when it comes to knowing what to study.

Fundraiser Friday is back!

So to kick off the new season, we want to help schools and teams build their ideas list for ways to fundraise for whatever it is they need to raise money for.
The most obvious thing to do is to host a regional competition, but we also know that isn't always an option for places, so we are sharing ideas each week to help teams try new things in their area.

This week @mrgarnersworld has the recommendation of writing to civic organizations such as Kiwanis or Rotary! As a former history club advisor, wrestling coach and Georgia teacher of the year, he has utilized this to help get his classroom and his clubs the materials they need to shine, whether it be for AP exam prep, new wrestling equipment, or team materials for competitions.

Stay tuned each week for more ideas from our staff, as well as fellow teams and coaches who share their tried and true methods!

It's Team Thursday again and we have a submission from a team out of Louisiana! Submitted by Kate Pedrotty:

"The 2024 JV History Bowl team representing Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport, LA, included Johnny Zheng, Graeme Neeley, and Gil Pedrotty. All three students are members of Caddo Magnet's Quiz Bowl program, coached by Andrew Medlin and Amanda Lawrence, but this was the first time for the school to field a History Bowl team at Nationals. It was a successful debut: the team finished 3rd out of 60 teams in the JV division and recorded the highest-ever finish for a team from Louisiana at the History Bowl and Bee National Championships. Caddo Magnet Quiz Bowl is excited to continue sending its history specialists to compete against the top teams in the country at IAC National Championship events!"

Gil is also a strong player in our international tournaments, placing fourth in the middle school division at the 2022 International History Olympiad and competing again in the Junior Varsity division in 2023.

We look forward to seeing what this team from Louisiana brings from the bayou this season!

Did you hear the news? For Where in the World Wednesday we are focusing on the news in the US about the change to include Varsity and Junior Varsity Bee levels at what were previously known as the Middle and Elementary School Regionals!

So what does this all mean? What are these "National Science, History, & Geography Bee Regional Tournaments"?

If you're in grades K-8, nothing changes, you still need to take the ORQE to qualify and compete at a regionals. Bees are going to be all around the country starting in November. Still Red, White and Blue sets, and competing in up to three regional finals to qualify to go to Orlando for Nationals.

However, for you Varsity and Junior Varsity players, this gives you the chance to play in bee only competitions using our Red, White and Blue sets, AS WELL AS our C, B and A sets at the normal Varsity/Junior Varsity Tournaments. It doubles your chances to qualify for the National Championships in Arlington!

This does come with some rules and guidelines that we will be explaining in a further update, but it should make that transition from middle school division up to the junior varsity division a lot easier!

This means we need to get more sites scheduled for some higher traffic areas, such as Northern California, the growing community in Phoenix, and in Minnesota! If your school would be interested in hosting a tournament to raise money for your teams or school programs, please email Scott Fowler at scott@iacompetitions.com.

Let's see you at a regionals this season!

Today’s Where in the World Wednesday talks about connections in time. Today in history, 1955, a young man by the name of Emmett Till was brutally murdered without justice for his death.
The murderers, protected by laws against double jeopardy, admitted that they murdered and tortured the young man after being acquitted in a trial.
This admission lead to the start of the Civil Rights Movement .This lead to the Freedom Riders, the bus boycotts, etc.
Eight years later, on the anniversary of Till's death, Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech was delivered during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

Two events in history, linked together by their part in the Civil Rights movement, having the same date in history just eight years apart.

This Materials Monday has us looking to US Operations Director Deborah Pettingill's bookshelves!
Deborah is a former high school history teacher, and she has a plethora of resource books she recommends for our high school players to study specific areas. This week? Freedom Riders by Raymond Arsenault.

Arsenault's book is an excellent look into the history and the experiences of the Freedom Riders and the Civil Rights movement. While not for younger readers, it's a great read for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the Civil Rights movement in the south and elsewhere.
