Presenting Quiz Competitions in History, Science, and Geography for Elementary, Middle & High School Students Across the USA!

Trivia Tuesday comes off the back of a book recommendation made yesterday....the thought about Waffle Houses triggered a random fact!

Did you know that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) uses an unofficial metric to determine the severity of a storm and the likely scale of assistance needed for recovery in an area?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index

It's true! If a Waffle House is operating on a full menu after a natural disaster, it's classified as green and minimal damage. Yellow signifies a limited menu and likely powered by a generator or low on supplies. If the restaurant is closed, it's Red.

Waffle Houses are known for being open 24/7 in the southern US, in areas known for strong weather such as tornados and hurricanes, and if a store is shown to be in yellow or green, it is a good sign of recovery for the area.

Materials Monday is back!

So with the new season about to start, parents and students have been emailing asking for their best resources to study for all levels of competition.

While we have past questions listed on our resources page (https://www.iacompetitions.com/resources/), sometimes people want more!
My personal favourites for books are the Curious Minds series, the North American Maps one in the image above being the newest in my collection. I find the statistics in the book both informative and humourous at the same time, such as the Waffle Houses by latitude or the fact that two out of three Americans live within 100 miles of the border.
My other favourite is the almanac on the left, Toksvig's Almanac. While it is dated as 2021, it has a fact for every day of the year, leaning heavily on the women in history and science from around the world. Another good one for that, On This Day in History from James Fell, is a good one.

I'll be sharing more recommendations as the season heats up from various coaches, teachers, and staffers.

So one of the best parts about this program is seeing how the kids really develop their voices in their love of history, geography, and science. For this new series, we want to showcase some of our superstar players who have found ways to show their love of history besides in our competitions.

First up, @thehistorytravelguy Parker Jelke!

Parker is a rising sophomore player from @ransomevergladesschool in Florida, who has been playing with us since sixth grade. He (as well as his whole family) has a great love of travel, history and competition, and recently started his travel and history blog, https://historytravelguy.com

His stories from his time in France this summer have been fun to read and make this writer want to go to France to see what he has shown in his stories! Well done, Parker!

If you (or your student player) have a site or stories you want to have shared on Fridays, email kiersten@iacompetitions.com with the information and we may showcase your work in an upcoming post!

We have a lot of new followers, and with the new season coming up for 2024-2025, we wanted to remind people of how the processes work for qualifying in the United States for the Middle and Elementary Divisions.
First, all students in grades K-8 need to take the Online Regional Qualifying Exam. This will be available in September.
Qualifying students can then sign up for, and compete in, up to THREE regional finals! Regionals are held in person and online, and each student can play in one per colour question set (Red, White and Blue). The top half of each division (grade level) at a regional competition after three preliminary rounds will qualify for the National Championships!
National Championships for Middle and Elementary School is on June 6-9th in Orlando, Florida, with both Bee and Bowl options for competitions, as well as the fun exams in specialized areas, which kids and their families can do to win more awards!
Internationals are on a rotating basis depending on subject, with International History Olympiad being our 2025 competition. Our International Programs aremuch more interactive and hands on, with field trips, family programs, and competition options that are multimodal, team and individual style and appeal to all types of competitors.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email ems-info@iacompetitions.com for how to get started, what you can do to get your child involved, or your school involved!
Hello!

Now that International Geography Championships are complete, including the Post IGC trip, our US based staff are working hard to get the next competition season ready to go!

We are looking for sites all over the country to host regionals for the Varsity and Junior Varsity division, as well as for Middle and Elementary School division! If your school is interested in hosting a regional tournament, please email info@iacompetitions.com with information about which division you are interested in hosting, and we will get you in contact with the correct divisional representative to help you get started on your hosting journey!

Also, the Online Regional Qualifying Exam is not yet available for our Middle and Elementary School division, but if you make your sponsor account we will email you when the exams are available. Exams to qualify are available for History, Geography and Science.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get ready for the 2024-2025 Competition season!

The Post IGC tour is wrapping up in Berlin! Touring castles and other fun places are great, but what seems to stick out more are the friendships being made by the staff and the kids. Dewitt Silber and his family have really made some great friends with Eli, Ritvik and @seanb507 and made great memories along the way!

Today’s group in the IGC tour are in the Neues Museum getting a brief lecture on hieroglyphics from history teacher @seanb507 after a visit to a portion of the Berlin Wall that is still standing! The group is nearing the end of their trip, and their photos have been great to see!
