Presenting Quiz Competitions in History, Science, and Geography for Elementary, Middle & High School Students Across the USA!

Fundraising is something we are often asked about in emails. While we cannot help teams with donations, we do have a HUGE Google doc for teams and schools to look at for ideas that work everywhere. This document is full of ideas that have been used by the former teachers on our staff, as well as by people who have had to fundraise for similar activities.

Visit https://www.iacompetitions.com/fundraising-ideas-for-schools-and-parents/ to see what ideas might work for you!

IAC partners with ASDAN to help organize our competitions for students in China. ASDAN also helped bring 21 Chinese students to the 2024 International Geography Championships in Vienna. While on an around-the-world outreach tour, IAC Executive Director David Madden visited with ASDAN staff Shelley Sun, Lilian Yu, and Michelle Liu last evening for a delicious Chinese feast! David will be visiting schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai together with ASDAN staff over the next few days, and we look forward to welcoming more Chinese students to the fun of academic competition for the 2024-25 season and beyond!

So we've decided to change things up this season for our Wednesday posts!
Instead of focusing on where in the world we are, we want to highlight some of the amazing women in history who may not be known about or don't get enough of the credit they deserve. Each week this season, we'll highlight an amazing woman from around the world through a historical lens. Some will be picks from staffers, some will be from the amazing Toksvig's Almanac by Sandi Toksvig (a great resource book!)
In honor of Indigenous People’s day this week, let’s shine a light on an amazing advocate for the rights of Native Americans, Sarah Winnemucca of Nevada. Born in 1844 with the name Thocmentony, she rose to prominence for her advocacy when her mother and several other members of her family were among those murdered in an attack by the US cavalry in 1865 against the Paiute tribe. After the Bannock War, Paiute people were held in what has been described as a concentration camp in Yakima, Washington. Sarah traveled to Washington DC to advocate for their release. She continued her advocacy work until her death on this date in 1891.

Trivia Tuesday is all about science today!

On this date in 1959, six weeks of negotiations began to set up the Antarctic Treaty in Washington, DC. Attended by representatives of Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Britain, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the United States, and the Soviet Union (now Russia), this treaty led to the resolution that the continent would be used for free scientific research, with no military bases allowed. A later protocol was added to the treaty in 1991 banning mineral and oil exploration for 50 years and included regulations regarding protection of the natural environment. This treaty and its added protocol were later signed by other countries.

Today is all about “outside the box” learning tools. Teachers and coaches know that not all students learn in the same way, and it helps to find fun and inventive ways to memorize facts to get those nuggets of information in. We’ve seen teachers on Instagram adapting songs, pairing multiplication tables and Taylor Swift tunes to get this generation of students learning; so with a little digging, a great geography one has been found to help kids prepare for the Maps and Flags exams for Nationals!

Special thanks to the Geography Pedant channel on Youtube for putting this one out there to memorize all 196 sovereign states and their flags! https://youtu.be/RN8-JSSVO_0?si=sgh7MMAe4K6YI-AH

October 9th marks the anniversary of the shooting of youth activist Malala Yousafzai by a member of the Taliban. Malala, a proponent of the education of women and girls, is a well spoken activist who continues her work in the world of education. Though she was shot in the head in 2012, she survived and became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient two years after the attack.

Special post from executive directors David and Nolwenn Madden! In the words of David:
“We visited with teachers at Seward Elementary School on Monday, making Alaska the 50th state I’ve visited. Seward is where Benny Benson (the student who created the Alaska state flag) lived when he did that (though he was at a different school for Alaska natives which no longer exists).”

Today marks the anniversary of The Great Chicago Fire. In 1871, after months of drought, a fire started in the barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary that lasted three days and spread from the West Side of Chicago and destroyed over 17,000 buildings through the Northside until rain, Lake Michigan and the empty lots in the North stopped its progression.
What started it is often a subject of debate, despite song lyrics that say it was caused by a cow kicking over a lantern, but the aftereffects are indisputable: nearly one-third of the city was destroyed, over 100,000 people left homeless, and approximately 300 people died during the three day fire.
With the recent storm Helene and the coming storm Milton, we are sending our support to those affected by these disasters. Stay safe and remember: hide from the wind, run from the water!

We often get the question in our email boxes “How can we really prepare for the competition?” We shared the study guides last week, so this week let’s talk practice questions.
We provide questions from past seasons on our website in all our divisions and subjects. These questions help to give new players a chance to get used to the question format and use their reasoning and critical thinking skills to narrow down the cues to an answer. Once kids get a feel for the question format and how to buzz in when they think they know the answer, they are well on their way to a fun, competitive day!
Check out https://www.iacompetitions.com/resources/ the subject and grade level you need for preparation, and we look forward to seeing your players at an upcoming competition!
This week’s team spotlight is reigning Varsity Champion Livingston High School from Livingston, NJ. They are the National History Bowl champions for the 2023-2024 and the 2022-2023 seasons. They are also home of the Varsity National History Bee champion Robert Wang, who also was the Junior Varsity division champion for the 2022-2023 season. This year’s Junior Varsity team ended in 16th place as well. Their teams were recently recognized for their achievements in the New Jersey quiz bowl community by their county commissioner and their town council.
